Dear Friends,

Given that this week's Torah portion contains the classic discussion of the administration of justice in our society...I thought it would be an apt time to talk about what is happening to our Supreme Court.

I'll do so at our Shabbat Evening Service (7:30 PM), where we very much value your in-person attendance, while also offering the Livestream option.

By now you should have received our beautiful calendar, announcement of our Aug. 22 Gathering in the Garden, and High Holiday mailing. It's a quiet time now in the waning days of summer, but not for much longer!

Dear Friends,
I read an interesting story about how the chapel at Camp David, the presidential retreat center, was designed.
There's a valuable lesson for religious pluralism, which I will share at our Zoom Shabbat Evening Service (7:30 PM).
(Note that when the cantor is away we will continue to avail ourselves of Zoom).

Mark your calendar now for our annual Gathering in the Garden, on Sunday, Aug. 22 (4-6 PM).

Dear Friends,
I'm a big fan of ice cream (especially chocolate) and I'm a big fan of Israel.
So naturally I need to talk about the Ben & Jerry's controversy making headlines here and in Israel.
I'll do so at our Zoom Shabbat Evening Service (7:30 PM), and even explain how the Torah portion relates to the issue too.

Note that the cantor is away this week and next, and by popular request, I'll lead the service via Zoom.
We understand that people who grew accustomed to seeing each other via Zoom are missing that, and that not everyone is ready to return to in-person services.
So from time to time we'll look for opportunities like this week and next.

Dear Friends,
Do you know about The Forgotten Jewish Valentine's Day?
I kid you not...its coming up this Saturday, and I will speak about it our Shabbat Evening Service (7:30 PM)
Not only that, but the Cantor will sing appropriate Jewish romantic music!

It's certainly worth attending in person (in our humble estimation), but our services continue to be livestreamed as well. Either way, we hope to see you.

And ready to read a classic Jewish historical novel this summer? Our Adas Emuno Book Club has chosen As a Driven Leaf by Milton Steinberg, the epic tale of a leading Jewish sage who loses his faith during the Roman occupation of ancient Israel (based on a true story). Our Book Club meets on Sept. 16, so you have plenty of time to read it.

Dear Friends,
It was a pleasure to welcome back familiar faces to our sanctuary last week and we look forward to seeing you in-person (or via livestream) at our Shabbat Evening Service (7:30 PM) all summer.

What happens when some members of a community want to separate and go their own way just as the nation faces a perilous time? Just such a situation is described in this week's portion, and the Torah offers keen insight into managing the crisis.

Mark your calendar for Shabbat on the Palisades next week, when we will join with Temple Emeth for an outdoor service at the State Line (Alpine) Lookout (6:30 PM), with all four clergy leading the service.

Our Zoom Adas Emuno Book Club meets on Monday (7:30 PM). The Zoom link is in this week’s email from the Rabbi.

You are welcome to join whether you have read the book or not. We will be discussing The Choice, by Dr. Edith Eger, a memoir written by a Holocaust survivor.

And mazal tov to Deb and Jay Fein on the birth of their granddaughter, Eliza Valerie!

And I will share an emotional encounter with an American hero that I experienced during my recent trip out West that helps illuminate this week's Torah insight about true leadership.

A reminder on policy: Attendees must be vaccinated and for the foreseeable future masking and social distancing by family group will be required. Regrettably our oneg remains on pause.
We understand hesitancies remain for a variety of reasons, so our services will continue to be livestreamed as well.
